Sinkholes, the book!Welcome to About Sinkholes! I'm Sandra Friend, author of the book Sinkholes (published by Pineapple Press) and a long-time enthusiast of geologic formations. I live in Central Florida, where I first discovered sinkholes in the woods around my home in the 1970s and experienced some interesting sinkhole phenomena while I was in high school and starting college. My high school, Forest High School in Ocala, Florida, had sinkholes on the property and one caused enough damage to a school building we had to go on split sessions for a while as repairs were done. At Central Florida Community College, my alma mater, giant sinkholes opened up between the college buildings and Interstate 75 on a weekend we had massive rains. Sinkholes opened up in the interstate, too!

I discovered after moving away from Florida that sinkholes weren't just a Florida thing, but were found all over the country, and even across the world. I learned about karst, landscapes formed by erosion of limestone and other soluble bedrock, and the links between sinkholes, caverns, and some of the weirder geologic formations in the world. And since I couldn't find a book written at a simple level, I did research for five years and wrote this one. It may take me a while to build this site, but I invite you to join me on a journey into a very misunderstood and fascinating natural phenomenon: sinkholes!
